Ring from bygone eras and sudden shocking cases of spontaneous combustion The only hope for Earth's survival is a force of seven warriors each with his. Anyone who knows me knows that I'm a passionate advocate of the comics artform I'm also a huge fan of both Harlan Ellison and Paul Chadwick writerartist of the fantastic Concrete series In this graphic novel however the elements just don't gel Or at least the package doesn't add up to the sum of its very formidable partsThis story is a science fiction take on the Seven Samurai formula in which seven disparate personalities band together to save the day This being a Harlan Ellison story there are other thematic elements such as the tendency of human beings to enslave one another and the evolutionary path that allowed mammals rather than reptiles to dominateThe length of the story 200 pages allows only the space to shoehorn in the plot There's no character development and no opportunity for Ellison to offer his brand of wry angry social criticism At double the length perhaps all of these things would have been possible I can't help but think that with the Ellison prose touch this story would have made a great novella; a great capstone to Ellison's long and prolific career his output has slowed down considerably in his elder yearsStill as something of an Ellison completist I'm glad I read it It's competently done but less than I expect of Ellison by whom I always expect to be blown away

Harlan Ellisons 7 Against ChaosIn a distant future Earth is in grave danger The fabric of reality itself in unraveling leading to catastrophic natural disasters displaced souls appea. This is kind of a strange book Very old fashioned in its approach the story is kind of disjointed as though there are panels missing here and there and I don't think it was done on purpose just not the clearest style of storytelling A mysterious hooded figure puts together a team of seven outcasts from across the various worlds a terraformed Venus etc of this far future tale in order to set right a terrible occurrence which seems to be undermining the very fabric of time itself Why these seven is never entirely clear they don't seem to have any special importance to the story Each has hisher own uniue abilities but these play hardly any role in the story or its outcome It was kind of a weird story overall and I'm not entirely sure what about it appealed to artist Paul Chadwick to spend the time on creating this graphic novel Just kind of so so ARC provided by NetGalley
