Rrace house in Penge now fit to burst Vicky struggles to manage her three children and the joys of everyday family life As a new threat lurks behind every corner hope appears in the most unlikely of circumstances An enchanting funny sad yet bittersweet tale of life and living one that reminds us it's not a race at all but a journe. A free copy of this book was provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest reviewThis Holey Life is the story of Vicky a reluctant curate's wife whose husband has traded plumbing for priesthood In addition to the struggles she faces in dealing with her three daughters and change in lifestyle she also has her house invaded by the brother she never got along with after he is kicked out by his wife and who has brought his teenage son along with him Throughout this Vicky has to contend with the loss she still feels from her baby son's death possibly psychotic parishioners and living up to the example set by Amanda the current vicar's wifeI really liked this story I mean I cried my way through half of it I just felt so sorry for Vicky and everything she had suffered through with her baby boy and never dealt it but despite that or maybe because of it I really enjoyed this story I really felt for all the characters that made up Vicky's complicated family especially Olivia Vicky's daughter who obsessively cleans as much as her mother does and creates endless collages at nursery of celebrity body parts stuck together At times this story did feel like there was too much going on Vicky's brother's marital problems her neighbours' problems a possible assault charge against her husband her father's health problems and new girlfriend with so many plotlines it was a bit tricky to stay focused on what was actually important in the story and it became a bit convoluted with one thing happening immediately after another Despite this though I did enjoy reading about how Vicky dealt with it all and this is probably one that I'd recommendA funny but sometime sad account of a family dealing with grief and changes in circumstances 4 stars

This Holey LifeSophie Duffy is a real find Sharp as a tack Laurie Graham By turns deeply moving and funny the narrative zips along in an appealing and spirited voice Kate Long   that was the point at which I should've put my foot down Stamped it hard Stopped the past repeating itself But what did I do I did what Mum used to do in times of crisi. Vicky is struggling to cope with the all that life is throwing at her Her husbands change of career from plumber to curate her irritating brother who has come to stay following his marriage breakdown along with his son and a gigantic celloand the loss of her baby son and mother to name just a few She hides her grief and feelings dealing instead with the issues that arise one after the other in this thoroughly enjoyable bookSophie Duffy manages to write in such a conversational style that I was swept along with the story enjoying the way each characters story unfolded and was finally resolved It might sound like a tale of woe for Vicky but she is in fact a very warm hearted and completely believable character and there are many humorous moments to go along with the heartrending onesThe flashbacks to Vicky's teenage years were really well written and other characters sometimes narrating the tale made it all the interesting A really good read that has prompted me to purchase from the authorThank you to the publishers for the free copy through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review
