I can't even picture what Michael must look like because he was referred to as god like and so beautiful that people could not help but stare when he walked by Seriously Getting beyond that I did like the bookWhen the book was written it was very contemporary but it made me interested in the history of New York at the time and I even did a little research on the tenements of that day which added to the story for me Some reformers did believe the answer was to get the poor out of the cities and into the country and it is easy to see why they thought that wayview spoilerOne thing I appreciate about Grace Livingston Hill is that even though her endings are usually neat and tidy she is realistic about many social problems Yes you see positive changes in people but you also see characters like Aunt Sally who improves but cannot bear to get too far from the rum shopI had to smile at the end of the book because there is a scene so like Lady Catherine talking to Elizabeth Bennett in Pride and Prejudice I think the author must have been reading Jane Austen at the time of her writing this If I were writing a novel I would be tempted to put in a similar scene as well so no hate here but wondering if anyone else noticed that hide spoiler

This was one of those books that my mom pushed on me and I ended up really liking and I didn't want to read because it was a mom book What it really is is a story about love and forgiveness and how they can all work together I truly enjoyed this book

Lo MichaelGrace Livingston Hill's love for humankind shines through her character's journey to manhood Mickey a young newsboy saves the life of heiress Starr Endicott by taking a gunm. Halfway through this book was a 4star GLH I was fully invested in Michael's work in the slums Romance had taken a back seat to service However the ending was thoroughly disappointing Once the girl came back from Europe all of his poor friends were left on literary auto pilot Gotta get the nice guy married to the pretty socialite Worse there wasn't a shred of Christianity Michael gave the destitute criminally minded masses a couple clean houses love some nature walks and That's it No changed hearts or lives I know next to nothing about GLH and how her personal spiritual timeline matches with her published books I would love to know how the Beverly Lewis of the early 1900's wrote a book devoid of Christianity
